Sociology of Food and Health SOC 275

I picked this course because I am interested about nutrition and wanted to study the global picture of world nutrition. This class provide background for the “implications on or social organization, health, culture, politics, and the economy. Honesty, I had no idea how GMO foods came to be until I took this course. I also learned about the downfall of our small farm businesses and how in place we gave power to larger corporations to control our food chain. I now know that our few crops that are not involved in the GMO industry are affected daily by cross pollination. if you are interested in our food supply and how we affect the rest of the world, I would highly recommend that you take this class. Here is a sample of the work I presented at the end of the course. Soc 275 S Conley Final 6.30.16

The following is from the UNE course website:

This course explores the social nature of food procurement, distribution, and consumption through a systematic sociological enquiry into the food we eat. By exposing the social relations associated and influenced by food it draws out the implications on our social organization, health, culture, politics, and the economy. The course pays particular attention to the connection between our food and health. It is designed to integrate the multidisciplinary approaches to food and make the connections between what we produce and eat as a society and their social impacts, especially the impact on our health. Food’s essential nature to human life makes it is a central part of social existence and human civilizational development.
